What is motion? | 2 minutes
A ball rolls, a bicycle travels, and a train leaves a station. An object is moving when its position changes over time relative to a reference point.
A passenger sitting in a moving train is at rest relative to the train, but moving relative to the station.
- Position: where an object is relative to a chosen zero point.
- Distance: the total length of the path travelled.
- Displacement: final position minus starting position.
Walk 5 metres right and 5 metres back: distance = 10 m, displacement = 0 m. The symbol m means metres; s means seconds.
Your task: explain whether the seated passenger is moving, and name your reference point.
Done: your explanation includes both the object and its reference point.
